Huru/Ona by Eunice Njeri: Lyrics & Song Review

Huru/Ona by Eunice Njeri celebrates divine deliverance in a joyous acclamation and dance to God. Its a song for a truly grateful soul freed from captivity — a soul that cannot contain its praise and joy within. Such a soul will praise unashamed, even outwardly for the world to witness and come to the knowledge of Christ.

From the Bible, we see individuals who encountered miraculous works of Christ, and in turn responded by spreading the word about Him. This is what the song Huru/Ona stands for – freedom, praise and witnessing. The song comes in six weeks after the release of the Ayala, and is the fourth single on Eunice Njeri’s Huru Live Recording album. Other singles on the album have been Utukuzwe, Jesu Carry Me, and Ayala.

Scriptural references

Deliverance from captivity of sin and oppression

Foretold by the prophet Isaiah, part of the mission of Christ was to deliver captives, not only captives of the enemy, but also of sin. The freedom Christ gives is true. He came that we may have life, and have it in abundance, and we only need to believe in Him.

Multiple times in the Bible, Jesus performed miracles, healing the sick, curing lepers, restoring sight to the blind see, and in every instance, He required faith. Deliverance from sin also calls for faith in Jesus. We ought to believe.

‭‭Luke‬ ‭4:18‬ ‭KJV

‬‬[18] The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised,
‭‭John‬ ‭8:36‬ ‭KJV

‬‬[36] If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Redemption

Though we may falter, we must remember that Christ already paid the ransom for our redemption from sin, and as a result we are justified, and counted righteous on account of Christ. We must therefore live zealous of Him who saved us.

‭‭Titus 2:14‬ ‭KJV

[14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

All-powerful and indomitable God

Nothing is out of the reach of our God. He is the creator of the earth and the heavens and the greater universe. He is powerful over all creation, and His ability spans far beyond our comprehension. He commands us to believe in Him to see His power at work in us.

Ephesians 3:20 KJV

[20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Joyous praise and witness

What is the response fitting for a privilege as high as God setting us free and saving us? What could we possibly give in return for his grace and mercy? Nothing is and could ever be proportinate to the overwhelming love of God.

All we could do us render our hearts to Him, to obery Him, follow His commands, and tell the world about Him.

We see the example of the possessed man who Jesus healed, afterwhich Jesus commanded him to return to his house, and show of God’s great deed. The Samaritan woman at the well, after encouraging Jesus’s power, rushed to the town and witnessed to the people. The leper, healed through Peter and John lept in praise to God.

Joyful praise and witnesss is a fitting response.

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭116:12‭-‬14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

[12] What shall I render unto the LORD For all his benefits toward me?

[13] I will take the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the LORD.

[14] I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.
‭‭Luke‬ ‭8:38‭-‬39‬ ‭KJV

‬‬[38] Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

[39] Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
‭‭John‬ ‭4:28‭-‬29‬ ‭KJV

‬‬[28] The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

[29] Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
‭‭Acts‬ ‭3:8‬ ‭KJV

‬‬[8] And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
