Scriptural references

Jesu Carry Me by Eunice Njeri is a multi-themed song, exploring different settings we all encounter – trrials, storms, difficulty, battles, and on the brighter side, victory.

The song borrows from different scriptures as follows:

  • Upholding – Trials and difficulties are inevitable. No believer is exempt. However, we have recurring assurances in the Bible of God’s upholding through the worst of times. We are commanded not to be afraid. Isaiah 43:2 carries this assurance. Again, Isaiah 45:2 speaks of God removing hinderances feared invincible at the time — gates of bronze, and bars if iron. This serves to show that God is able to give us to prevail against the greatest of challenges.
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[2] When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭45:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[2] I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.
  • Victory from God is assured – Across the Bible are numerous instances of battles won, the greatest being the battle against sin, won by Christ, for which have victory against enemies, including sin and death. We cannot win on accord of our own strength, it is God who fights, and affords us victory, as Deuteronomy 20:4 attests:
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭20:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬[4]
For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”
  • God’s preparation of His people for hardship – On Psalm 144:1, David recounts that God trained him for war. This training began from his days of shepherding. Whatever we face, God adequately equips us, albeit through unpleasant circumstances. Coming out however, we are able to face any challenge.
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭144:1‬ ‭NIV
‬‬[1] Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
  • Christian warfare – The song gints at different postures of warfare, including kneeling, praying, raising hands, and raising a sound. While there may be different factions on matters warfare, the underlying truth is that god fights our battles, and victory is already won through Christ.
  • Healing from God – While there might be a lot of debate on this subject, truth is healing still comes from God, be it may from miracles, or through treatment.
  • Mountains – The song makes reference to Zechariah’s vision on the rebuilding of the temple, which then seemed like a mountain. The text assured that by the Spirit of God, the challenges will be levelled down. Christ also assures that even a little faith can move mountains.
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭4:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[7] “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’ ”
  • Calling God by His name in other languages – On this song, Jesus is addressed as Jesu, which is a translation of the Name in one of Kenya’s languages. Recently, the arist Joel Lwaga released two songs, Olodumare and Oluwa, also using names of God in Nigerian languages. What do you think of this?

Song lyrics

Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Blessed be the Lord
The God of David
He taught me how to war
Now I know to fight
With lifted hands
And on my knees oh
Crying out
Clapping hands
I lift a shout
I raise a sound
I pray a prayer
Cos victory is sure

Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

I came running
Jesu carry me
I came crying
Jesu wipe my tears

He touched my life and
He gave me life
He healed my body
And made me whole

I came running
Jesu carry me
I came crying
Jesu wipe my tears

He touched my life and
He gave me life
He healed my body
And made me whole
Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through many waters
Many mountains
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Through every valley
Every gate
Jesu made a way for me
He gave me victory

Who are you
O mountain
Who are you
Who are you
O mountain
Who are you
Before my God

Who are you
O mountain
Who are you
Who are you
O mountain
Who are you
