Nyasha Ngoloma: Bio And Journey Into Gospel Music

Eve Nyasha Mutsembi Ngoloma is a Kenyan music minister, singer and songwriter who rose to prominence for her songs such as Njoo Roho, Uhimidiwe, Sifa Zetu and Nakuabudu. Birthed from a place of fellowship with God, her songs speak of deeper desire to connect with God and encounter the Holy Spirit.

Her songs are a product of her personal fellowship with God and are usually her genuine prayers. She attributes the excellence of her music ministry to her professional background in Marketing and Strategy which she believes inculcated both discipline and professionalism in everything she does.

Take for instance her song Usifiwe (Hakuna) Medley in which she features Bethuel Lasoi and Janice Wanjiru-Kioko and which reiterates the message that praise be to God for who He is and all He’s done for there exists none else like Him. A simple message that never gets old and one that can often be forgotten given the hustle and the bustle that we all get caught up in in our daily lives.

Nyasha’s journey is a testament to the boundless possibilities that faith in God can unlock. Raised in a pastoral household, she has always been deeply connected to the church and its mission. Her story is a reminder that what God cannot do does not exist.

She fondly recalls an instance when she asked her father for a bicycle and he told her to have faith that she would get it. Growing up, she knew exactly what she wanted; the corporate life and corporate she got.

But before that, all young Nyasha wanted was to join St. Georges Girls’ Secondary School and God granted her the desire of her heart, the first of many more answered prayers to come in her life. She was initially called to Narok University to study Tourism and Management but as God would have it, her aunt who resides abroad, sponsored her Bachelor’s degree and Masters Degree in Strathmore University Business School where she instead studied Marketing and Strategy.

Immediately after completing her secondary education, she got a job in corporate and despite that being her dream job, she had a strong pull towards ministry. At the time, she was expectant and so she dragged her feet with regards to the calling of ministry.

When she was just about to take her maternity leave, God instructed her to resign so that she wouldn’t benefit off of the company’s proceeds and then resign immediately after her maternity came to an end. In obedience, she told her boss she wanted to resign and he in return turned her down twice before realizing that she was indeed serious. As a doctor, he thought the pregnancy hormones were getting to her and so he gave her more time to rethink her decision.

That’s not to say she did not doubt or rethink her decision, because she did. She cried the whole week following her resignation and even questioned whether she’d heard God right. Contrary to the leading of the Holy Spirit, she started her own fashion business selling scarves but because that is not what God had called her to do, it did not really take off.

Journey Into Music

Nyasha’s journey into music is a combination of her journey into ministry, her walk in obedience and her journey in mentorship.

Journey into Ministry

Growing up in a Christian household meant that Nyasha received salvation at a pretty young age because for her, that was life as she knew it. In her fourth year of high school, she made the conscious decision to pursue Christ.

Fast forward to Nyasha who was now in her second year of her Bachelor’s degree, and who had discovered that much to her surprise, campus was not as difficult as her teachers in high school had made it out to be. She joined a fellowship for praise and worship while she was still doing her undergraduate studies in line with her decision to pursue Christ.

She started partying and that began an endless cycle of partying for her. Esther Kazungu, had introduced her to ICC (International Christian Centre) in 2012 where she joined their youth church called Frontrunnerz. She would sit at the back and was not a frequent attendee yet.

Even then, she desired to join the praise and worship team and leapt at the opportunity when it came. Despite being a part of the worship team, she was still a no-show on most Saturday rehearsals because on those same Saturdays she had hangovers from her Friday night revelries.

Pastor Wambua, their worship pastor, caught on to her double life following several missed rehearsals. Nyasha graduated and went on to do her Master’s Degree at Strathmore still. They often had networking events with their lecturers after which they’d go drinking at Airport Lounge.

On one such night, she and her classmates had gone drinking at the very same place. At some point in
that night, her classmates started leaving one by one and she did not realize it until she was left all alone.

She ordered more drinks for herself and it was in that instant that she had an encounter with God. Despite being drunk, she became sober for a moment. She had been facing the dancing floor when the Holy Spirit asked her what she was doing at that particular scene and prompted her to look at how the ladies were being taken advantage of.

Additionally, the same voice instructed her to look around at all those who were in the club and how they were all just seeking something that they could not find in the club. She paid for drinks but proceeded to leave them there. Once outside, she rang Noel who thought that the alcohol was speaking. He hailed a cab for her to her house in Nairobi West where she lived at the time.

When she arose the next morning, she vividly recalled her encounter the previous night and that was her turning point. She never went out or drank after that night. Her experience and her transformation gave her compassion for her friends who are stuck in that life because they seek what only Jesus can provide. Since then, Nyasha has been engrossed in ministry and serving others through her gift.

The Manifestation of the Gift: The Gift came alive

She and Noel wanted to do a live recording but they both knew it would be rather costly so they held it off until they would get to a place where they could afford to do one well. At this point, Nyasha was considering going back to work so that she could finance her ministry.

After battling with the thought for some time, she surrendered to God’s will for her life and learned how to start small when it came to her live recordings. God, however, sent people her way to guide her and walk with her in her musical journey and ministration. One such person is Dr. Ipyana, who became a mentor and friend to the Ngolomas.

A Mentor and a Friend: A match made in heaven

They met Dr. Ipyana in a rather unconventional way. Nyasha and Noel were meant to lead worship at ICC on that particular Sunday. Their worship pastor, Pastor Wambua, was a big fan of Dr. Ipyana back when he was still starting out and would frequently ask the members of the worship team if they had heard of him or knew his songs, which they didn’t.

Dr. Ipyana was supposed to headline or lead the praise and worship but ended up getting an interview at Citizen TV instead and so he could not make it to lead the first service. Given that he had honored their invite, they in return cued his songs for that Sunday’s praise and worship session.

He could only make it to the second service. He went for his interview and ended up getting to ICC before the first service ended where Nyasha was leading one of his songs and if that’s not a fairytale beginning, I don’t know what is.

Thence began an interesting friendship which saw Nyasha gain a mentor in Dr. Ipyana who would often times remind her that she had a gift in her and she needed to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to unravel that which God had put in her.

Countless times he urged Nyasha to put her musical gift to good use and even asked if pride, people’s perception or fear of asking for sponsorships is what was holding them back. According to him, if Tanzanians had the kind of equipment that she had at her disposal there at ICC, they would be releasing recordings weekly.

At this point, Nyasha had become so familiar with Dr. Ipyana’s advice that she did not take much heed to it up until he told her that he would never tell her about ministry again because she had become a sponge that just kept absorbing but was not pouring.

Marriage

Whoever said wedded bliss has become a rarity has not seen Nyasha and Noel, ergo, they couldn’t be more wrong! The two tied the knot during in September during Covid which narrowed their guest list from their desired 700 people to only 70 people but even in that, their blessing was at hand.

Noel, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya had won a case that had been going on for quite some time. As a result, the client, who was an Indian man sought ways to reward him for his excellence.

He asked for two invitation cards to the wedding and even though Noel didn’t think much of it, he gave the client the wedding invitation cards. On their wedding, he told them he had been building apartments in Syokimau and Lang’ata and told them to check them out and choose the one they liked best.

Just like that, they got to be homeowners residing in a luxurious apartment. Their apartment was not yet ready and so they had to wait four months before occupying their home. God continued to provide for the couple in ways only He could.

Even before they got married, they had always admired the Nissan Tiida for being spacious, and had made plans to get one as soon as they could afford it. One time when Noel was at work waiting for the rains to subside, his boss noticed that he was the only one who hadn’t left and inquired to figure out why. Noel disclosed his reason which moved his boss greatly who in turn gave him a loan to buy their first car.

Challenges

At the onset of her musical career, she was once told to first work on establishing her brand before they did a song together so that she would not piggy back on their success. She also found out the same people who were pushing her forward were the same people who’d talk behind her back.

Luckily for her, she had a strong support system in her team who’d protect her space. She also had people who encouraged her to let go of the pain and the hurt that she had held onto and that was that.

Upon her resignation still, she developed complications in her health. For one, her umbilical cord had gone around her baby’s neck twice and she had developed a lump in her right breast which again made her question whether she had heard God right.

ICC usually has worship nights on Fridays, starting at 7pm. Despite feeling discouraged, she and Noel decided to attend for only thirty minutes as she was trying to keep it together and block out her sadness. Because Noel was immersed in the worship, they extended their departure time by 30 minutes to 8pm.

As they were leaving, they were met by Bishop Gibson and the entrance of the overflow who assumed that they were leaving the overflow for the main sanctuary which led to her breaking down and they stayed. The prayers that he made were so specific to her because he prayed for the safety of her delivery process which she was afraid of and the safety of her unborn child even without knowing it.

The very next day, the bishop’s wife, Pastor Liz, phoned her and encouraged her to heed God’s calling over her life even if people didn’t understand. She went on to encourage her by giving her an example of someone she knew who obeyed and heed to God’s calling and her life was transformed for her simple act of obedience.

She reminisces a time just after she had given birth and was unemployed where she would look at her husband who was thriving in his career and would leave the house and she wondered what would become of her after her maternity leave or the trajectory her life would take after it.

“As a song-writer, you should know that your main work is shaping theology through your
song.”

Nyasha Ngoloma

These are words Nyasha lives by and have become evident through her powerful ministry. She also stresses that the work you put in before writing the song – your personal fellowship with God – is more important than the actual writing of the song.

Jambo Jipya was written at 5:12pm at the Homecare retreat Centre in Karen. She was going through some challenges in her life and jokes that she could not wait for the room attendant to leave so that she could get in her good long cry which had been way overdue.

And so, she did. From 9 am up until 5:12pm. Jambo Jipya was her way of praying or being genuine with God. She wrote down the lyrics without even realizing that she was quoting scripture to which she references the verse that says, from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

ICC had invited Essence Of Worship once before so when they came a second time for the One Nation One Worship Concert, Gwamaka was moved by her leading of Bwana Ni Mchungaji Wangu – a song by Reuben Kigame. At the time she was heavily pregnant but that didn’t stop Gwamaka from inviting her to Tanzania to do the same song in their set and hers too in case she had one that she had written. When she got to Tanzania, they got so busy that they lacked time to do Reuben Kigame’s song but did Jambo Jipya together with the Essence of Worship Team.

Previously dubbed “Slave To Righteousness” and an English song for that matter, Chukua Usukani had an entirely different message at its inception. However, Nyasha thought about her audience who may not have related to the song and rerouted its title and message. It too, was written at a time where she was frustrated concerning the things that had been happening around her.

She has gone on to collaborate with prominent people in the Gospel Music industry such as Alice Kimanzi to create Yupo and Wewe ni Bwana together with Flora Weru, Paul Clement to come up with Asante and Tunakiri Sote and Manolo with whom they created Sifa Zetu. Atop these, she has a vast portfolio of songs which include Njoo roho, Nakuabudu, Atamaliza, and Uhimidiwe just to name a few.

God the Promise Keeper

Just as Pastor Liz had told her, God did indeed walked with Nyasha and has continued to do so. Nyasha reflects on all the promises that God has been faithful to fulfill in her life even before she heeds to His instructions pertaining ministry and her life in general.

She actually says that her life has simply been from glory-to-glory with God constantly showing up and showing off with her. From her going to her dream high school, being sponsored throughout her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, landing her dream man and job, acquiring their first car as a couple, becoming homeowners and the biggest one yet – their son – has been a testament to the fact that where the Lord leads, He surely provides.

Awards and Recognition

Nyasha’s name and songs have continued to dominate the gospel music scene and it is not without cause. Her preeminence in the worship music and praise songs coupled with her dedication have earned her thousands of followers country wide.

Her talent, which goes without saying, has attracted international collaborations with artists from Tanzania such as Dr. Ipyana, Paul Clement and Gwamaka, proving that her music ministers to even those who live beyond our borders.

With her music ministry already at an all time high, we cannot wait to see the powerful ways in which God will use her and her life to impact the lives of everyone that comes into contact with her and her music.
