Raha by Wapendwa Muziki and Bunny Asila: Lyrics & Biblical Song Review

Raha by Wapendwa Muziki and Bunny Asila is a song of commendation for the Christian life, as one filled with pleasure. Contrary to popular thinking, pleasure in the Christian perspective is nothing like wordly indulgence, but rather an enjoyment of the benefits of God: His blessings, joy and satisfaction obtained from living in His presence and walking in His ways.

However, Christian pleasure is not tied to good times and material blessings, but solely on God and His unchanging character. We are warned that there will be difficult times in the Christian walk of life, testing of faith, even persecution, and it is in these such times that pleasure may not take the form of happiness, but joy in trusting and believing in God.

Wapendwa Mziki enjoyed great success with their hit single Amefanya Mungu, now with more than 12 million streams. The song was a testimony of the deeds of God. Their new release Raha builds further on the goodness of God.

Main themes

Raha by Wapendwa Muziki and Bunny Asili shines spotlight on the pleasurable side of the Christian life. As such, the main themes are:

  • Pleasure for the Christian
  • The blessings of God
  • Allegiance
  • Invitation to the Christian life

The blessings of God

On the song, blessings are seen as:

  • Protection and deliverance
  • Cleansing from sin
  • Success in life

Does God bless His people? Yes, most certainly so. Every good thing thay does not corrupt comes from God. For a believer, blessings come not only in the form of tangible things, but also riches in grace, atonement of sin and sustenance.

Psalm 124:2-3 KJV

[2] If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

[3] Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
1John 1:7 KJV

[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
James 1:17 KJV

[17] Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Proverbs 10:22 KJV

[17] The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

Pleasure for the Christian

There is plenty of pleasure for the believer, within the bounds of the faith. All other forms of pleasure become sinful if they deviate from the ways of God.

The Christian life experience cannot be sufficiently described with pleasure alone. Suffering is also apportioned unto the believer, in the form of faith-refining trials, temptations, or persecution.

Pleasure here on earth must not blind the believer to the fact that we are mere sojourners, and we shall leave this world someday, and enter into an eternity with God.

Proverbs 10:22 KJV

[11] Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Proverbs 10:22 KJV

[11] Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Philippians 1:29 KJV

[29] For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

Allegiance to the faith

In the face of opposition, ridicule and persecution, believers in the early days of the church stood their ground and defended the faith. Raha on the other hand employs some allegiance to the faith though in trendy colloquialisms like shi’ngapi, nitaservu.

Acts 5:29, 40,41 KJV

[29] Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

[40] And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

[41] And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

Invitation to the faith

The Psalmist invites us to taste and see that the Lord is good. The song Raha gunners for the same, challenging those outside the faith to come in.

1 John 2:15-17 KJV

[15] Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

[16] For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

[17] And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Audience

Huru/Ona is a good fit for individual edification and congregational worship.
